SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION OF CORNING, NY
Three Cities | One Mission
Promote peace through mutual respect,
understanding, and cooperation
one individual, one community at a time.
MEET OUR SISTER CITIES
You can make a difference in global understanding by joining Corning's Sister Cities Association. Sister Cities has three exchange programs that will develop your outlook on the world and understanding of life in other countries. Each year, students and adults from the Corning region travel to our cherished sister cities in Italy, Japan, and Ukraine. In return, we host visitors from abroad.
ITALY
San Giovanni Valdarno
Formed in 2003 after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, San Giovanni Valdarno sought a community with business in glass art manufacturing and wine making. The cities participate annually in high school student and teacher exchanges. Beyond school exchanges, the mission includes collaboration on business and economic development, the arts and tourism.
JAPAN
Kakegawa
Born from a business relationship in 1989, Corning Incorporated and the Japanese town of Osuka began an exchange program for students and adults. Osuka merged with Kakegawa in 2005 which broadened the program. Each summer, a chaperoned trip to Kakegawa is offered to Southern Tier students and adults. This trip is an exciting opportunity to partake in daily Japanese life. Students from Japan then visit Corning in August.
UKRAINE
Lviv
Based on the desire to create peace after the Cold War with the Soviet Union, Sister Cities was an opportunity to work for peace on a people to people basis. Relations were made between educators, businesses and citizens in both countries. Since its inception in 1987, the focus of the relationship between Corning and Lviv has been to create business, educational, humanitarian and cultural ties between the two cities.
